A dental crown is a reliable restoration used to fix a damaged tooth. However, they aren’t perfect. Sometimes they can fail unexpectedly and fall out.

Whenever a crown falls out, it can be a stressful event. You may be concerned about your appearance, and it may inhibit proper eating or speaking. A missing crown is also an odd sensation to experience, just as any sudden change in your mouth would be.

The most important thing to do is remain calm and realize that you aren’t in any immediate danger.

If possible, locate the crown and bring it with you to the dentist’s office. We’ll examine the crown as well as the condition of your exposed tooth to determine the best course of action. If undamaged, we may be able to place the same crown. Often, however, the crown becomes dislodged due to additional decay or other damage occurring in your mouth. In these situations, we’ll probably have to create a new crown to match the altered conditions.

In the meantime, avoid chewing on the affected area and try not to disturb the tooth too much with your tongue. You also may want to avoid hot or cold foods and drink as the exposed tooth may experience heightened sensitivity.

Oops, I swallowed it…

Additionally, since a dental crown often becomes dislodged during mealtime, patients sometimes accidentally swallow the crown altogether. While it’s not ideal (and may even be a little embarrassing), there is no need to worry! The crown should pass through the digestive system entirely unnoticed.
